Dating back to the 1830s, the historical homestead was purchased by the Bowman Family in 2002 and converted into a Montessori elementary school. Woodlawn has since expanded its facilities to house a dynamic K-12 educational environment while preserving the historical significance of the homestead. The design maintained the original southern vernacular of the homestead while incorporating modern amenities to support the growing student population. The phased approach set the stage for future master plan development; establishing the primary organizational elements and infrastructure needed to support the school’s growth while minimizing the impact on the heavily wooded site.
